Writing Rain & Thunder
A few months ago we incorporated picturing writing into our times of day unit. Through picturing writing children are not only artistic through their paintings, but also their words. Picturing writing is a great technique to use for poetry and tied in nicely with our lessons on becoming poets and using our senses to see things around us in a new way. We began talking about rain and read many beautifully illustrated books about rain to draw ideas from. We then drew a crayon resist drawing of rain a technique where we press down hard in our drawings to get the crayon waxy. The next step is adding water color paint over the drawing which gives paintings a more life-like effect. This gave us a beautiful image to describe. We talked about verbs and adjectives -- how rain and thunder sonds, moves, and what it looks like.
